A private temazcal in Tulum The womb of Mother Earth

A ritual steam bath with fire, stones and herbs. A wellbeing practice with ancestral roots — not a tourist attraction.

Grupo Tulum Temazcal

Reconnecting with the roots of what is Mexico today

A temazcal is not a tourist attraction. It is a wellbeing practice, and what we want is to give it back the place it deserves in life today.

It is not esoteric either, and it is not a matter of faith. Heat and steam do something very concrete: they bring you back into your body, they make you breathe slowly, and they let you be grateful for what you can actually see — the earth, the water, the fire, and the people sitting beside you.

And above all, so that we reconnect with the ancestral roots of what is Mexico today.

The journey

Seven chakras outside, four doors inside

Outside, in a circle, an alignment of the seven chakras and breathing exercises. Inside, about two hours in four doors: each one faces a direction and carries its colour and its element.

About the temazcal

A ritual steam bath, a wellbeing practice

Its origins go back to the pre-Hispanic medicine of the native peoples of the American continent. The temazcal is the symbolic representation of the womb of Mother Earth.

You go in in the dark, you sweat, and you come back out into the light. That is the whole figure.

What a temazcal is →

Fire

The fire heats the stones for hours before the ceremony begins.

Earth

The dome is the womb. You go in in the dark, you sweat, and you come back out into the light.

Water

Water steeped with herbs falls on the red-hot stones and turns into steam.

Air

Between one door and the next, fresh air comes in and the circle breathes again.

Herbs

The medicine is in the plants

Every ceremony is prepared with the herbs the moment asks for. They go into the water that falls on the stones, and from there into the steam you breathe.

  • LemongrassCymbopogon citratus
  • EucalyptusEucalyptus globulus
  • RueRuta graveolens

And many others, according to what the moment and the circle ask for. See the six we use most, and what has been studied about each one →

Benefits

Wellbeing for body, mind and spirit

No faith required, and nothing to believe in. This is what people who have been through it say it did for them:

  • Relax the body deeply
  • Let go of emotional weight
  • Breathe more freely
  • Slow right down

The full list, and what the practice is →
It is not a medical treatment and it does not replace the care of a health professional: we do not cure anything.

The ceremony

The volcanic stones glowing red in the fire pit, next to the herb pot

A copper pot with fresh herbs boiling over the embers
The fire burning inside the stone oven, with the altar and the drums ready

My wife and I took part in a private ceremony with Emilio. They took time to explain everything and make sure we felt comfortable throughout the Temazcal. It is an experience that we will always remember.

We came from Texas to see Emilio and his partner. They were both extremely knowledgeable and made our group feel right at home.

Our social contribution

Who is behind this

Tulum Temazcal is a project founded by Octavio Sabanero, Mexican by birth. It comes from one clear intention: to make the wellbeing side of ancestral practices known, and to put it within reach of anyone who wants to know it.

The temazcal is the symbolic representation of the womb of mother earth, and what happens inside works on the whole of a person: body, mind and spirit. It is not esotericism, it is not a miracle and it is not a tourist performance.

If you reach out to us, it is not by chance.
